Stem cells
are our most powerful cells, genetically
unique to each of us. As the building
blocks of the body, these cells have the
potential currently to treat an
exponentially growing number of
diseases. Stem cell treatment is mainly
used to combat diseases like cancer as
well as disorders of the blood but
research is showing that stem cell
transplants can be used in cell based
therapies for degenerative diseases and
tissue repair.
Already, stem cells are being used to
treat inherited blood disorders, and
cancers of the blood, like leukemia and
lymphoma. Stem cells are already used to
treat Thalassemia; a disease to which
people in Southeast Asia and in
particular Thais are prone.
In the future it is hoped that stem
cells will be used in gene therapy or to
fight heart disease and degenerative
illnesses like Alzheimer’s. Positive
results have already been indicated for
diseases like Parkinson’s and diabetes.
There is even evidence that stem cells
can be used in serious spinal injuries
to help repair damaged nerves.
Other current new applications are Stem
Cell transplants in acute heart infarct
and heart insufficiency as well as
diabetic and other wounds.

What is umbilical cord blood banking? |
 |
| |
|
The blood in the umbilical cord of the
newborn baby is a hugely important
source of adult stem cells. We, as an
umbilical cord blood bank, offer you all
the services needed in collecting,
processing, freezing and storing the
cord blood stem cells of your precious
little one that has just arrived in this
world! After collecting umbilical cord
blood with our closed system collection
kit of international standards, the
blood will be immediately transported to
our laboratory (IN BANGKOK and not in
some remote country) to be processed,
the stem cells separated and frozen at
-196°C in a state of “suspended
animation” to preserve them in the best
state possible. Storing your baby’s stem
cells in Bangkok circumvents all risk
with cold chain disruption when
transporting outside of the country. And
more importantly, you know who to
contact and you can always visit our
laboratory! It will also be easy
and safe for you to request your stem
cells should you need them in the future
and not needing to send your loved ones
for treatment to remote countries,
different cultures and strange faces.
Our stem cell banking partner also
possesses a so called “cryoshipper” that
is a portable liquid Nitrogen tank for
transports all over the world
Cord blood collection happens easily moments after your
baby has been delivered to this world
without risks or derangement of the
delivery process (be it natural birth or
caesarian section) within 5-10 minutes.
The cord blood will be collected after ligation of the umbilical cord without
any pain to the mother or baby! Tissue
compatibility probability within the
family is higher that outside the family
(one in four compared to 1 in 50,000)
making it possible for other members of
the family to use these stem cells
should such a need arise in the future (HLA
compatibility testing will be necessary
before). Uses of stem cells will
increase in the future, the number of
diseases treatable with stem cells today
is more than 70, and these increases are
exponential making probable to treat
heart and central nervous system
diseases (stroke, spinal cord injuries)
in the very near future. Experimental
results in Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s
are incredibly encouraging and on track.
Families around the world are
increasingly keeping this precious blood
full of stem cells and now it is
available to you as well! |

What is
Adult Peripheral Blood Stem Cell
Collection (PBSC) Service? |
 |
| |
|
PBSCs are hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs)
that are circulating in the blood. HSCs
circulate at low levels in the blood all
the time but can increase in number
dramatically when a person is treated
with certain cytokines (substances that
stimulate the bone marrow) such as G-CSF
(a natural factor also produced by your
body) or when hematopoietic (bone
marrow) recovery occurs following
chemotherapy. PBSC transplants tend to
engraft faster than bone marrow
transplants presumably because they have
greater a proportion of mature
progenitors. When patients hear and talk
about “stem cell transplants” they are
typically referring to peripheral blood
stem cell transplants. Stem Cells are
normally found in the bone marrow but it
is possible to move them out of the
marrow into the bloodstream so that they
can be collected easily. |

|
Thai Stem Cell Bank in Thailand uses an
instrument (called apheresis machine)
that is also used in the routine
collection of blood, found in all good
blood donation centres (regular blood
donors will recognize this machine). A
blood collection needle is placed in an
arm vein, blood travels to the machine
and the stem cells are separated from
it. The stem cells are collected in a collection bag while the rest of the
blood returns through a second needle to
the opposite arm. The entire procedure
requires approximately 2-4 hours, the
length of a good movie.

After
collection, the stem cells are
immediately sent to our specialized
state-of-the-art stem cell processing
laboratory where the stem cells are
safely and securely cryo-preserved for
your future use. |
